How often should we have a bowl action?

This has been a subject of much debate with one school of thought saying, you go when you need to go while the other saying you should have a bowel urge within 30 minutes of eating.

Encyclopaedia Britannica and hence some GP’s say there is nothing wrong with having the bowel impacted for over a year as there doesn’t seem to have any ‘harmful effects’.

Personally I find the idea of not going to the toilet for over a year a ridiculous notion and as to it not having any ‘harmful effects’ I suppose if your definition of harmful effects is that it won’t kill you, then this definition may sit well with you.

You may at this stage think this is too ridiculous to mention but I feel that I must as I have heard with my own ears numerous times from Medically trained and trusted professionals who advise patients not to worry if they don’t have a bowel action for months.

Studies of African tribes who have very high fibre diets and a healthy lifestyle show that their intestinal transit time (ITT) is between 12 -24 hours. Western society rich in over processed foods on average have a ITT of 48 to 72 hours and not uncommon for people to have ITT up to one week!

Every time you eat, waste is produced and if this waste is not evacuated, next time you eat more waste is produced. In people’s bowels there is a back log of  food putrefying for days or even weeks.

Famous Naturopath Dr Bernard Jensen and Dr Kellogg spent decades of their professional careers saying that you are in danger of developing chronic degenerative disease (CDD)  if you do not evacuate your bowels daily, preferably 2-3 times a day. CDD is a very large medical category covering a lot of conditions which means that most people you know can benefit from this simple advise.

Putting all these professional opinions a side,  just look at a new born baby or the average house hold puppy, both have bowel actions within 30 minutes of eating.  I believe that we all had this ability and along the way have trained ourselves out of this good habit as its not always convenient when the urge appears and the loss of our healthy bacterial ecosystem has contributed greatly to a constipated nation.
