Constipation

Constipation is one of the most common reasons people see a naturopath, and one of the least often talked about. It covers hard stools, straining, going less often than you used to, or the feeling that you never quite finish.

There’s no single normal. Three times a day and three times a week are both within range. What matters is the consistency, the effort, and whether your own pattern has changed.

What your naturopath looks at

Fluid and fibre, in that order. Fibre without enough water makes a firmer stool, not a softer one, which is why the standard advice sometimes backfires.

Which kind of fibre. Soluble and insoluble fibre behave differently, and the right balance depends on whether you’re dealing with hard stools, sluggish transit or both.

Magnesium and other nutrients that affect the muscular contraction moving things along.

The gut environment, including what a course of antibiotics or a long low-fibre stretch may have changed.

Habit and posture. Ignoring the urge trains the reflex out. Position on the toilet changes the angle of the rectum and, for some people, changes everything.

Medications. Iron, some antidepressants, opioid pain relief and several blood pressure medicines all slow the bowel. Bring the list to your appointment.

Thyroid function and cycle-related change, both of which affect transit time and both of which are worth testing where the picture suggests it.

⚠ When constipation needs medical assessment first

Get assessed now, rather than booking, if you have constipation with blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, or a sudden change in bowel habit after the age of 50. New constipation that will not shift, or alternating constipation and diarrhoea, also needs investigation before anyone treats the symptom.

If you contact us with any of these, you’ll be told the same thing and helped to get seen. Where investigation is the right next step, we’ll refer you with a letter setting out what was found and why.

What changes usually look like

Slow and specific rather than a full overhaul. Two or three things, chosen from what your history shows, given long enough to work before anything else is added. Where a herbal or nutritional prescription is appropriate it’s explained and priced before you commit to it.

Related: bloating, IBS, how digestion works, gut microbiome and leaky gut.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I actually be going?

Anywhere from three times a day to three times a week can be normal. What matters more than frequency is whether the stool is soft and passes without straining, and whether your own pattern has changed.

Are laxatives a problem?

Occasional use is not. The concern is the stimulant type used daily for months, which is worth reviewing with your naturopath alongside whatever is driving the constipation in the first place.

Does more fibre always help?

No. Adding bulk to a bowel that is already sluggish can make bloating and discomfort worse. Which type of fibre, how much, and how quickly it is introduced all matter, and that is what your naturopath works out with you.
