Weight loss has been surrounded by myths and fads for years.

Low-carb, high-protein, low-fat — each changes the way your body uses food, and most are difficult to hold. What actually shifts total body fat over time is a change in how you live.

Physical activity and better food are only part of that. Your mental outlook matters too: feeling positive and focused supports digestion, immune function and stress regulation, and it’s a lot easier to sustain a change you’re not miserable about.

Five steps that make a difference

  1. Chew your food. Eating in a rush doesn’t give your body time to digest. Wait at least 20 minutes before going back for seconds — that’s roughly how long fullness takes to register.
  2. Eat food you had a hand in preparing. Digestion starts before the first mouthful. How that works.
  3. Move most days. Not necessarily hard, but regularly.
  4. Sleep. Short sleep affects appetite hormones directly, which is why tired weeks are hungry weeks.
  5. Deal with the stress you can. Chronic stress works against every one of the four above.

What your naturopath will check first

Weight that won’t move despite genuine effort is worth investigating rather than attacking harder.

Thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, iron and nutrient status, medications, sleep and stress hormones all affect weight, and none of them responds to eating less. Your naturopath will take a full history and, where it’s clinically appropriate, recommend pathology or functional testing to see whether one of them is in the way.

If there’s a digestive component — bloating, irregular bowel habit, suspected food intolerance — that usually gets addressed first, because it affects how well you absorb what you eat.

Frequently asked questions

Why do fad diets stop working?

Low-carb, high-protein and low-fat approaches all change how your body uses food, and most of them are hard to sustain. What tends to hold is a change in how you live rather than a change you're counting down the days on.

Is there a medical reason my weight won't shift?

There can be. Thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, medications, sleep and stress hormones all affect weight, and none of them respond to eating less. That's part of what your naturopath will want to rule in or out before recommending anything.

Will I be sold a weight loss product?

No. There's no product range here and nothing is prescribed as a shortcut. What you'll get is an assessment and a plan built around your history.
