Detox, detoxify and detoxification programme all refer to the same idea: reducing the load of unwanted substances on the body and supporting the systems that clear them, mainly the liver and the lymphatic system.

The approach here uses diet, herbal medicine and movement. There’s no product range, no kit and nothing gimmicky — just a programme your naturopath sets at a pace your body can manage.

Being straight about what it is

Your liver, kidneys, bowel, skin and lymphatic system are already clearing metabolic waste, continuously, and they don’t stop without intervention. A sensible naturopathic programme doesn’t claim to switch that on. It reduces what’s coming in, supports the nutrients those pathways depend on, and gives your digestion a period of lighter work.

That’s a real and useful thing. It just isn’t the thing the wellness industry usually sells, and your naturopath will be direct with you about the difference.

What a programme involves

Your naturopath starts with a full history: what you eat and drink, your bowel habits, sleep, stress, alcohol, medications, and any symptoms you’ve noticed.

From there they’ll usually set out dietary changes, herbal support chosen for your presentation, and practical guidance on hydration and movement. Where it’s clinically appropriate they may suggest pathology or functional testing first, so the programme responds to something measured rather than assumed.

The pace matters. Going too hard too fast tends to leave people feeling worse, which is a reason a great many self-directed detoxes get abandoned in week one.

Who it suits

People carrying digestive symptoms — bloating, constipation, irregular bowel habits, indigestion — often find this is where their naturopath starts, because the digestive system does so much of the work.

Sara Canney’s practice centres on digestive health, including IBS, candida, constipation, intestinal permeability and suspected food intolerance.

⚠ Tell your naturopath about every medication and supplement you’re taking, and about pregnancy or breastfeeding, before you begin anything.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy a detox kit?

No. There's no kit and no product range being sold to you here. A naturopathic detox is a dietary and herbal programme your naturopath builds around your history, and what you're prescribed depends on what they find.

Isn't the liver already doing this?

Yes. Your liver, kidneys, bowel, skin and lymphatic system clear metabolic waste continuously and don't need permission to do it. What a well-run programme does is reduce the load and support the nutrients those pathways rely on. Anyone telling you your body can't do it without their product is selling something.

How long does it take?

It depends on where you're starting and what your naturopath finds. It's set at a pace your body can handle rather than to a fixed number of days — a sudden aggressive programme tends to make people feel worse, not better.

Is a detox safe if I'm on medication or pregnant?

Tell your naturopath about every medication and supplement you take, and about pregnancy or breastfeeding, before anything is prescribed. Some herbs interact with medication, and some aren't appropriate in pregnancy. Your naturopath will adjust accordingly.
