Autoimmune conditions

An autoimmune condition is one where the immune system reacts against the body’s own tissue. There are more than eighty of them, and the common ones seen here include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, coeliac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and lupus.

They’re diagnosed on antibodies, imaging or biopsy, and they’re managed medically. That’s not something naturopathy replaces.

⚠ This is medically managed care

If you have an autoimmune diagnosis, keep your specialist and keep your medication. If you have symptoms that suggest one — persistent joint pain and swelling, unexplained fatigue with other signs, recurring rashes, unexplained weight change — you need medical assessment to find out what it is.

Your naturopath works with your medical team, not around them, and will refer you where a diagnosis or a review is what’s actually needed.

Where naturopathic care contributes

Nutritional status, which is very often affected. Absorption may be impaired, several of the medications used deplete specific nutrients, and appetite through a flare is rarely normal. Iron, B12, vitamin D, zinc and folate are the ones most commonly involved, and they’re measurable.

The gut, where a large proportion of immune tissue sits. Diet, fibre range and the microbiome are all reasonable places to work.

The load that makes flares harder — sleep, chronic stress, alcohol and blood sugar swings. None of these causes autoimmune disease, and all of them affect how a week feels.

Diet, built rather than restricted. Elimination diets circulate widely in this space and progressively narrower eating causes its own problems. The aim is something workable and nutritionally adequate.

Medication interactions, checked before anything is prescribed. Tell your naturopath everything you take, including what you bought yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can a naturopath treat an autoimmune condition?

Not on its own, and nobody here will tell you otherwise. Autoimmune conditions are diagnosed and managed medically, often by a specialist, and naturopathic care sits alongside that. Where it contributes is nutritional status, the day-to-day symptom burden, and the things that reliably make flares harder — sleep, stress and gut health.

Do I need to go gluten-free?

In coeliac disease, yes, and permanently. In other autoimmune conditions the evidence is much less settled and it depends on the individual. Get coeliac disease excluded before removing gluten, because removing it first makes the test unreliable.

Will herbs interact with my medication?

Some will, which is exactly why your naturopath needs the full list. Immunosuppressants, biologics, thyroid replacement and corticosteroids all have known interactions, and immune-stimulating herbs are approached carefully in autoimmune disease rather than used freely.
