Psoriasis is an immune-mediated condition where skin cells turn over far faster than normal, building the raised, scaly plaques that give it its appearance. It most often shows on elbows, knees, the scalp and the lower back.

It’s chronic, it’s diagnosed medically, and it’s managed rather than cured.

It isn’t only skin

Psoriasis travels with things worth knowing about. Around a third of people with it develop psoriatic arthritis, and joint pain or stiffness — particularly in the morning, or in a finger or toe that swells as a whole — should be assessed rather than waited out.

There are also well-established associations with cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome, which is why blood pressure, lipids and blood sugar belong in the picture rather than off to one side.

Where naturopathic care contributes

The trigger load. Stress, infection — streptococcal throat infection in particular — skin injury, smoking, alcohol and some medications are the recognised aggravators. Mapping which apply to you is specific work.

Metabolic health, given the associations above. Weight, blood sugar, lipids and blood pressure are all reasonable things to work on and all are measurable.

Nutritional status, including vitamin D, essential fatty acids and folate, tested where indicated.

The gut and the diet, built rather than restricted.

Sleep and stress, because the flare pattern usually tracks them.

⚠ What needs medical care

Psoriasis affecting a large area of the body, psoriasis with joint pain or swelling, pustular or rapidly spreading psoriasis, or any flare with fever and feeling unwell needs medical assessment. Prescribed treatment continues alongside naturopathic care, not instead of it.

Tell your naturopath every medication you take. Several used for psoriasis are immunosuppressive and have known interactions with herbs.

Related: autoimmune conditions, inflammation and arthritis, eczema and dermatitis, gut microbiome and leaky gut.

Frequently asked questions

Is psoriasis just a skin condition?

No, and this is the part most often missed. Psoriasis is immune-mediated and systemic, with well-established links to psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome. That's why joint symptoms and blood pressure belong in the conversation, not only the plaques.

Can naturopathy clear psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that's managed rather than cured, and that's true of every approach to it including medical ones. Where naturopathic care contributes is the trigger load, nutritional status and the metabolic picture that travels with it.

Do I need to give up alcohol?

Alcohol is one of the better-documented aggravators, and it also interacts with several of the medications used. Whether that means less or none is a conversation about your own pattern rather than a rule handed down.
